An Edwardsville man is free on bond while awaiting his day in court to answer child pornography charges. 30-year-old John T. Cameron of the 800 block of Amherst Place is charged with five felony counts of possessing child pornography with the intent to distribute. He is not allowed to return to his home, although he is allowed to see his children.
Cameron was arrested February 1 following an investigation by the Edwardsville Police Department. He is accused of possessing the porn that is said to depict underage girls being sexually assaulted. The charges are Class X felonies, which short of first degree murder, is the most serious felony offense on the books in Illinois. Upon a finding of guilt, the court cannot sentence the defendant to probation. The offense has a mandatory minimum sentence of 6-30 years in the Department of Corrections. If convicted, Cameron would also be required to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life. According to the Madison County court records website, he is due in court today (Friday) for a preliminary hearing.
