Work Zone Safety Awareness Week

Story by WBGZ Radio

It's Work Zone Safety Awareness Week, and motorists are reminded to pay attention when they see orange. More than 4,800 crashes occur in work zones annually in Illinois, killing 44 people just last year.

Tabitha Stambaugh is a highway worker and says she's had some close calls, including one where a driver did not slow down when they approached the work zone.

Illinois State Police says besides speeding, the other biggest problem is that motorists are distracted, texting or talking on their cell phone and just not paying attention near work zones.
