Study Compares State Costs

Story by WBGZ Radio

A new report from Southern Illinois University's Paul Simon Public Policy Institute tries to give an "apples to apples" comparison between Governor Bruce Rauner's Turnaround Agenda and what Illinois' neighbors are doing.

The report says some things about Rauner's agenda that a lot of Illinoisans already know: Property taxes and workers' compensation costs in the state are too high.

SIU Professor John Jackson says the study also debunks some of the Turn Around agenda, specifically how Illinois compares with term limits.

Jackson says the hope is that lawmakers can use the report as evidence to make the case for change. Particularly with workers' compensation.

The report also lays blame for Illinois' skyrocketing pension debt at the feet of the Edgar Ramp. The report notes Illinois' pension payment went from about five-percent of the budget to over 20-percent in just four years.
