New Members for Sanitary District

Story by WBGZ Radio

The Madison County Board has approved three new members for the Metro East Sanitary District Board, including a member of the County Board.  Helen Hawkins has been appointed and will step down from her work with the county.  Hawkins says her goal is to help solve flooding issues for those living in Granite City and Nameoki Townships.

Hawkins will be joined on the MESD board by other newly appointed members Charles Brinza and Don Sawicki.  Three MESD board members resigned at the request of Board Chairman Kurt Prenzler so he could put new people in place.  Hawkins helped create the Metro East Sanitary District in 1974, when voters dissolved the East Side Levee and Sanitary District.  Hawkins, a Democrat from Granite City, has dealt with flood water in her own neighborhood on many occasions, which is one of the main reasons she was chosen.  Prenzler says Hawkins has worked for her part of the county for years and brings a lot of experience to solve flooding issues in southern Madison County. Hawkins replacement on the county board will be named next month.
