Story by WBGZ Radio

The Macoupin County Courthouse in Carlinville is one of the oldest operational courthouses in the country, still serving its' original purpose that is. Built in 1870, many courthouses of its' era have become museums or since been razed. Old buildings require upkeep, and the courthouse has announced its' elevator will be closed for repairs beginning on Monday the 19th. The repairs are expected to last 7-9 weeks, during which time those in need of assistance will have provisions made for them, the county has announced.

When the courthouse was built, it was the most expensive courthouse in the country as well as the largest. At $1.3 million, or $23.5 million today, it took Carlinville area locals 40 years to pay off the debt incurred during construction. It was the first fireproof building erected in the country, as wooden frames were the norm in 1870.
