Bethalto Business Districts On Hold

Story by WBGZ Radio

The creation of two business districts in Bethalto is on hold. Trustees took no action at this week's meeting that could have given the go-ahead to create the new taxing districts. Supporters of the plan say the money generated from a 1% increase in the proposed districts could go toward infrastructure improvements, a hotel feasibility study, or a number of other things the village would need to find additional funding for.

Bethalto Mayor Alan Winslow tells The Big Z there are still some unresolved issues that need more research before moving forward.

One proposed district would run along Illinois Route 140 from just West of Illinois 255 to just east of Moreland Road. The other would cover sizeable portions of both Prairie Street and Irwin Plegge Boulevard. There will likely be another meeting on the topic next week, at which time it will be determined whether more public meetings will be needed before bringing the issue back to the council in October.
