McCann Files Legislation to Improve Road Safety

Story by WBGZ Radio

State Senator Sam McCann ( R-Plainview) has filed legislation to help stripe dangerous roadways. Senate bill 2267 would allow state and some federal funding to be used for road striping. The legislation was inspired by the death of Lynn Jason Turner, who was killed in a vehicle accident near White Hall, after his car crossed into the opposite lane on an unstriped road in heavy fog.

The laws on the books now only allow road striping to be funded by proceeds from motor fuel taxes. Do to increased state usage of the fuel tax revenue, the amount that counties receive has been drastically reduced, leading many counties and road authorities unable to pay to paint stripes on roads to divide lanes and mark the edges of the roadway.
