Sheriff Warns of Scam Activity

Story by WBGZ Radio

There are a number of scams being reported around the Riverbend. While the so-called grandparent scam continues to prey on mostly elderly victims, another is casting a wider net by pretending to offer a fix for what is likely a bogus computer virus or malware.

In the case of the computer scam, victims report a pop-up box warning their computer is infected, Madison County Sheriff's Department Lieutenant Kris Tharp tells The Big Z the criminals claim it can be fixed by following certain instructions.

In the case of the grandparent scam, the grandparent was contacted by a person who identified himself as a prosecutor from New Jersey, claiming the grandparent’s grandchild had been in an accident and needed money for issues which had arisen from the crash. Tharp reminds law enforcement will never call you asking for money of any kind, and urges anyone that receives this kind of call to contact their local police department.
