Motorists Reminded School is Starting

Story by WBGZ Radio

Drivers should be on the lookout as school begins for police patrols if they plan to cruise through school zones above the speed limit.   It's 20 miles per hour when students are present, and Alton Police will most likely write tickets to violators near the schools in the city as classes begin.  There are a couple of laws that you should be aware of when traveling through Illinois school zones.

All school zones are no passing zones. Also, Alton Police Chief David Hayes says when you are approaching a school crossing area, remember that any children or adults in the crosswalk area do have right-of-way.

Hayes comments

Speeding in a school zone is a fine of $150 the first time, and $300 for the second offense, plus an additional $50 that goes to the school district any time you are ticketed.
