Akin Stays In Senate Race

Story by WBGZ Radio

Despite pressure from top Republican Party leaders, Missouri Congressman Todd Akin remained in the Senate race on Tuesday as a critical deadline passed.  Missouri election law gave him until 5 p.m. yesterday to remove himself from the November 6th ballot in the Senate race against Democrat Claire McCaskill.  If he should decide to step down, he would now need a judges order to remove his name from the ballot.

Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and other top Republicans were among those urging Akin to step aside.  Akin is vowing to remain in the race despite the controversy surrounding remarks he made in a TV interview Sunday concerning rape.  He had claimed women could not get pregnant from quote, "legitimate rape" when he was asked about his being opposed to abortion even in the cases of rape and incest.  Akin has since apologized for his remarks.
