Authorities have recovered the body of one of two men who they believe drowned at Carlyle Lake over the weekend. Illinois Conservation Police, Army Corps of Engineers and other local law enforcement agencies have been at the lake since Saturday night after the two men went missing. One of the victims is from Highland, the other from St. Charles, Missouri, their identities have not been released.
The body was pulled from the lake just before 8 a.m. today according to Illinois Conservation Police spokesman Chris McLoud.
Officials say that three men went boating on the lake Saturday night, when one of them jumped into the water, and began struggling. A second man jumped in after him; both disappeared under the water, and never resurfaced. The third man remained with the boat, but was not familiar with how to operate it and began to drift away from the two in the water. Other passing boaters attempted to assist, but were unable to reach the men.
