Judicial Elections Focus of Watchdog Group

Story by WBGZ Radio

The head of a group that keeps an eye on frivolous lawsuits is promoting Lawsuit Abuse Awareness Week in Illinois.  Travis Akin, Director of Illinois Lawsuit Abuse Watch, says the group is joining with mayors and community leaders around the state in a public education tour that saw the group's executive director make a stop in Alton on Tuesday.

Travis Akin says the message they are trying to promote is that "Good Judges Matter."

Akin comments

By law, judges are not allowed to state their political positions while campaigning for retention, but Akin says there are opportunities to meet the judges at county fairs, fall festivals and other community events, and get a feel for their disposition on topics important to you.  A report released last month ranks Illinois' lawsuit climate fifth worst in the country and Madison County's is the sixth most unfair and unreasonable jurisdiction in the nation, according to Akin.
