Chamber of Commerce Wants Immigration Reform

Story by WBGZ Radio

Immigration advocates hope if they say it enough times, Congress will eventually listen.  The issue is immigration reform. “The key, for me,” said Doug Whitley, president of the Illinois Chamber of Commerce, “is to make sure that Illinois congressmen know that we can’t wait until 2015. This is a now issue, and it’s unacceptable to put it off.”

Whitley was one of a half-dozen panelists at a discussion put on by the Illinois Business Immigration Coalition. Other voices represented were the faith communities and even law enforcement.  But it was up to a member of the audience, a district representative of U.S. Rep. Rodney Davis (R-Taylorville), to suggest the emperor has no clothes. Tim Butler told the group feedback at Davis’ Washington office is running 80-20 against the Senate-passed immigration bill and against any form of amnesty. Butler said the pro-immigration forces would appear to have a long way to go to persuade the U.S. House to approve changes.
