Law Could Put Cameras on School Buses

Story by WBGZ Radio

Cameras seem to be watching our every move. Next up: a camera to see if you’re illegally passing a stopped school bus.

“It's important to note that we are talking about legislation here protecting children,” says Henry Haupt, a spokesman for the Illinois secretary of state’s office, who adds a personal opinion: “Most citizens and most motorists don’t ever want to endanger children.” He says if a camera mounted on the outside of a school bus discourages people from putting kids in harm’s way, that’s a good thing.

The idea, Haupt says, is to take the “he said, she said” out of it, should it come to that.

The new law, recently signed by the governor, allows but does not require the placement of these cameras.
