Quinn Discusses Rauner Ideas

Story by WBGZ Radio
Gov. Pat QuinnGov. Pat Quinn isn’t on board with all the changes proposed by a potential Republican opponent.  Republican governor candidate Bruce Rauner is launching a petition drive for constitutional amendments that would create term limits for lawmakers, reduce the size of the Illinois Senate, and require the support of more legislators to override a governor’s veto.

Quinn has been behind similar changes in the past, such as an unsuccessful term limits initiative in 1994. An earlier initiative to reduce the size of the Illinois House of Representatives was successful, cutting the chamber down to its current size of 118 members, from 177. Rauner’s proposal would cut 12 Senate seats, while increasing the number of House members to 123. Quinn says he supports keeping the House at its current size.

“That’s what the people voted for in a referendum, and I think they don’t particularly want to increase the size of the Illinois House of Representatives,” Quinn said.  While Quinn says he still believes in term limits, he’s against changing the requirement for overriding a governor’s veto from three-fifths of lawmakers to two-thirds. Quinn says the voters will have the final say on Rauner’s proposals.
