An Alton man has been sentenced following his guilty plea to setting a fire at the Calvary Baptist Church two years ago. 31 year old Alan Bartholomew will serve four years probation and must receive mental health treatment as part of a plea deal for him to plea to arson instead of arson at a place of worship. The Upper Alton church reportedly asked that he not be forced to pay restitution.
Authorities say Bartholomew set two different fires in the early morning hours of October 6, 2011, with one burning out before fire crews arrived. The other fire caused almost $2 million in damage to the church building, which was covered by insurance. Bartholomew must register as an arsonist for 10 years and stay at least 15-hundred feet from the church. He will receive mental health treatment through Wellspring Resources in Alton.
