Helen A. Clayton, age 91, of Alton, formerly of O’Fallon, born June 4, 1925 in Belleville, Ill., was granted eternal rest on Easter Sunday, April 16, 2017, at OSF St. Francis Hospital-St. Clare, Alton, Ill., with her family by her side.
Growing up in O’Fallon, Helen attended Central Grade School and O’Fallon Township High School. She also attended St. Louis University and earned her teaching degree and Master of Education at SIU Edwardsville. Mrs. Clayton taught first grade at Pontiac-William Holliday School for 25 years, impacting the lives of many children. She was a former parishioner at St. Albert Catholic Church in Fairview Heights, where she was active in Cursillo, PSR, Bible study, and the Soup Bus ministry. She later moved to her home parish of St. Clare of Assisi, where she remained active and faithful for many years. She was a member and local Past President of AFT Union, Fairview Heights Senior Citizens, participated in the Ministry to Sick and Aged, and was a lifelong fan of the St. Louis Cardinals.
Not only was Helen an amazing mom and grandma who loved unconditionally, she was also a kind and generous friend. Helen was gracious and ever-grateful. She will be remembered for her sweet and funny personality. She taught many lessons in her 25 years as a first grade teacher, but more importantly, in how to live life rich in friendship, stewardship, and adventure. Helen was a humble servant of the Lord and remained strong in her faith until the end.
Surviving are her childern Barry (Connie) Clayton, Denise (Francis) Nosce, all of Alton; grandchildren Alicia (Josh) Davis, Emily and Daniel Nosce; her great-grandson Roland Davis, and several cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband Dillon Clayton; her parents Joseph and Elnora, nee Malacarne, Franke; her brother Leroy Franke (a casualty of WWII); and her dear cousin Frances Gazzini.
