James M. Velloff

James M. Velloff, 79, died at 12:35 p.m. Tuesday, April 18, 2017 at his home in Alton. Born February 5, 1938 in Alton, he was the son of Marion S. and Agnes (Budde) Velloff. Mr. Velloff graduated from Marquette High School in 1956. He earned his B.S. in math and minors in education and philosophy from St. Louis University in 1960, and his Masters degree in math from Southern Illinois University in 1968. He taught high school math at Southwestern High School from 1960-1965, and Roxana High School from 1965-1993. He was also a business partner with his brother, Marion at Velloff’s Power Equipment in Alton from 1970-2015. Mr. Velloff enjoyed hunting, fishing, card playing, especially bridge and pinochle, traveling and camping with family. On November 24, 1960 he married the former Rita Terlisner, his love and partner for life. She survives. Also surviving are four children, James (Christine) Velloff of Alton, Beth (Dennis) Young of Carlinville, Michael (Beverly) Velloff of Alton, and Richard (Heather) Velloff of Milton, GA, 11 grandchildren, Joe, Brian, Renee and Ellen Young, Erin and Kylee Velloff, Clara and Cain Velloff, R.J., Clayton and Patrick Velloff, four brothers, Marion Velloff of Jerseyville, Michael (Terrah) Velloff of Godfrey, Thomas (Carole) Velloff of Irving, TX, and Christopher (Sharon) Velloff of Godfrey, and a sister, Pauline Rathgeb of Alton. Visitation will be from 5:00-8:00 p.m. Friday, April 21, 2017 at Gent Funeral Home in Alton. A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, April 22, 2017 at SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Alton. Father Jason Stone will officiate. Burial will be at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Godfrey. Memorials may be made to SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church, BJC Hospice, or the Crisis Food Center.
