Clarence Robert “Bob” Waters

Clarence Robert “Bob” Waters, 84, of Jacksonville, formerly of Medora, passed away at 9:56 am on Sat May 12, 2018 at Jacksonville Skilled Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. He was born on April 29, 1934 in a rural area near Modesto, IL to Wesley & Emma (Norton) Waters. He attended Goshen country school until 1948 when schools consolidated.
He began high school with the Northwestern School District in Palmyra, IL in 1948. Bob was noted in high school for his speaking ability and the talent to air flip at least seven bent friends during gym class. Bob graduated high school in 1952.
During high school Bob met the love of his life, Pat Baker. They dated throughout high school years and married Dec 27, 1952. Bob joined the US Air Force in 1953 and took basic training in San Antonio, TX.
After graduation from basic training Bob was stationed near Wichita Falls, TX until his transfer to Selfridge Air Force Base in Mount Clemens, MI, where his job was keeping the airplanes flying. He spent 14 months in England and served as a crew chief on a C-47 aircraft, flying all over Europe on assignment.
After his discharge he joined his family in Palmyra, IL. He found employment at McDonnell Douglas in St Louis, where he worked in the Clean Room preparing space craft for seven original astronauts, whom he later met.
He and Pat later settled near Medora, IL where Bob farmed, did carpentry work, and took care of his growing family. He was past leaders of the Medora Lions Club, The Southwestern Chamber of Commerce, and the Order of the Eastern Star. He owned a small coffee shop in Chesterfield where men met for deep thinking.
Bob was a solid citizen and a good friend to many who had major problems in their lives. He was kind to everyone and he always had something in the machine shed that would fix what was broken.
Bob is survived by his wife of 65 years, daughter Sheryl Waters of Springfield, daughter Deirdre Waters and her three children Zachary, Charlotte and Mitchell Crofton of Springfield, a son Gordon Waters and his wife Kari of Jacksonville, and his two sons Andrew Waters of Kansas City, MO and Justin Hill of Jacksonville.
Visitation will be 10-11 am Thurs May 17, 2018 at Targhetta & Wooldridge F H in Medora with Masonic services at 11 am with funeral services immediately following with Rev Nicole Cox officiating.
Burial will be in Camp Butler National Cemetery in Springfield, IL
Memorial may be made to the American Heart Association.
