Paul Edward Anders completed his journey through this life on August 15, 2012. His journey began on July 7, 1940 when he was born to Harvey and Helen Well Anders.
Paul was a lifelong resident of the Brighton area having been a graduate of the new consolidated Southwestern High School on 1958.
Following high school he worked for the state and then Owens-Illinois Glass Works, but in 1961 he began his studies at McKendree College in Lebanon, Illinois in order to follow what became his lifelong passion of teaching. While at McKendree, he was President of the Philosophian Literary Society and the student body.
During those years he met and courted his bride to be, Joyce Adcock of Bunker Hill.
His teaching career began in Bunker Hill in 1965 where he coached basketball and taught for nine years. During that time he earned his Master’s in Science in Counseling. In June of 1966 he and Joyce were wed at the United Methodist Church in Bunker Hill.
After a brief hiatus in the business world as a personal manager for the Venture Corporation, he returned to teaching at McCluer Senior High School in the Ferguson-Florissant School District where he remained for twenty-three years. During his time at McCluer he received the Outstanding Achievement Award from the Missouri Vocational Special Needs Association and was elected to Who’s Who in America Teachers.
Following retirement from McCluer he enjoyed five years of teaching at Lewis & Clark Community College. In 1978 he became a Lay Speaker in the United Methodist Church, along with his wife Joyce and for ten years they filled pulpits in small churches and served at Eden Village Retirement Center in Edwardsville. In 1988 he and Joyce were called into pastoral ministry and followed the unique calling of serving his home church St. Paul United Methodist in Brighton for eighteen years. Following retirement they served four years at Joyce’s home church, Bunker Hill United Methodist. Paul’s passions were the ministry, his family, teaching, model trains, gardening and traveling.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father and his sister Juanita (Anders) Sauerwein.
He is survived by his wife Joyce, daughter Paula and husband Mike McNally and grandsons Brenden and Rhys McNally.
Visitation will be Friday, August 17, 2012 from 4 pm to 8 pm @ St. Paul United Methodist Church In Brighton. Visitation will continue from 9:30 am until the time of Service on Saturday.
Celebration of his life will be Sat., Aug. 18, 2012 @ 10:30 AM @ St. Paul United Methodist Church
Interment will take place at Brighton Cemetery.
Memorial may be made to St. Paul United Methodist Church or Bunker Hill United Methodist Church.
