Granite City Leaving the SWC

The Granite City School Board voted 7-0 last night (Tuesday) for the Warriors to leave the Southwestern Conference.  They will compete in the SWC next school year (2017-'18) but then leave the conference in the fall of 2018.

Granite left the SWC in 1975 when they split into two high schools -- North & South.  The Warriors returned to the conference in 1985 when they became one high school.  The school was one of the founding members of the league back in 1923.

Granite plans on going forward as an independent school but will start searching for a new conference in the future.  One of the incidents that provoked the move was a Feb. 21 boys basketball game at East St. Louis H.S.  A gun was found in the stands and the game was stopped in the first half.  No shots were fired.  Both teams took a forfeit loss.

The Southwestern Conference will have 7 schools again for the first time since 1999-2000.  O'Fallon joined in 2000 to give the SWC an 8th team.

>>Edwardsville left the conference back in 1979 and was reinstated in 1996.
