In the IHSA Class 1A football playoffs yesterday Carrollton fell to top seeded Tuscola 48-20 . Tuscola now heads to number 6 seed Athens next weekend for the state semifinal.

 

In the Class 3A quarterfinal Carlinville ended it's season with a 20-14 overtime loss to Pleasant Plains. Carlinville running back Tucker Hughes was taken off the field on a stretcher with a possible concussion, after taking a hit to the helmet. Carlinville finishes their season 10-2.

 

In the game you heard last night right here on the Big Z, in the Class 8A quarterfinals, The Edwardsville Tigers beat the Minooka Indians 28-25 to send the Tigers to their first semi final appearance since 2013. The Tigers will face off against number 6 seeded Wilmette Loyola Academy next weekend.

 

In more football action you heard on the Big Z yesterday, the Fighting Illini fell to the Indiana Hoosiers 24-14. Indiana totaled 428 yards of offense and got their first win of the season in the Big 10. Illinois had a slow start marking just 72 yards of offense in the first half. The second half was only slightly better, but Illini QB Jeff George Jr. did throw a 77 yard touchdown to Louis Dorsey. George ended the day with 261 yards with 2 touchdowns but threw two interceptions and had a fumble. The Hoosiers marked 7 sacks and 3 QB hurries along with 10 tackles for a loss. The Illini have lost eight consecutive games and haven't won since early September.

The Edwardsville high School girls swim team won it's 4th consecutive sectional championship yesterday outpacing Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin 265-220. The Tigers will now send diver Taylor Seilheimer, the 200-yard freestyle relay team and the 400 freestyle relay team to the state meet set for this weekend at New Trier High School in Winnetka.

 

William Byron won the NASCAR Xfinity Series race yesterday at Phoenix International Raceway and was one of 4 drivers to qualify for next week's Xfinity Series Championship at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Ryan Blaney lead the race for 147 out of 200 laps but after taking 4 tires in his last pit stop he had to settle for second place. Erik Jones finished third and Christopher Bell came in fourth.

 

The St. Louis Blues lost to the New York Islanders 5-2 last night at Scott Trade Center. Now at 13-4-1, the Blues still lead the Western Conference with 27 points and remain one point behind Tampa Bay for the top overall spot in the NHL. The Blues got goals from Brayden Schenn and Scottie Upshall. Jake Allen made 14 saves on 18 shots before being replaced by Carter Hutton, who made 10 saves. Up next for the Blues is an away game tomorrow night against the Calgary Flames.
