Saturday Sports Roundup

 

It was a busy playoff day Friday for Riverbend soccer teams. Class 1A Regional Title Games were held at Marquette, Carlinville, Hillsboro and Breese Central, and 2 A Regional playoff action took center stage at Civic Memorial high school.

 

At the Marquette Regional, the host Explorers took on Breese Mater dei in the championship game, and Marquette walked away with the first place trophy. The Explorers found the back of the net 4 times en route to a 4-1 win. The Explorers are now 14-7-2 and advance to Sectionals.

 

At Breese Central High school, it was Trenton Wesclin against the Roxana Shells in the title tilt. The Shells edged Wesclin 3-2 to take the crown. Roxana advances to sectional play.

 

In Hillsboro, the host Hilltoppers defeated Staunton 4-1 to advance to sectionals. And in Carlinville, the host Cavaliers overwhelmed the Purple Panthers of Litchfield 4-0. The Cavs advance to sectionals.

 

Other Class 1A Regional Championships on Friday included:

Columbia 8, Murphysboro 1

Quincy Notre dame7, Williamsville 0

 

baseball and softball squads are finishing their regular seasons as they tune up for regionals.

 

In a softball game you heard here Friday on the Big Z, the Marquette Explorers easily handled the East Alton Wood River Oilers 10-1. The Explorers will play a round-robin on Saturday at Gordon Moore Park. The Oilers are finished with their regular season.

 

In other local softball action Friday, the CM Eagles fell to the Carrolton hawks 4-3. And the Jerseyville Panthers defeated Granite City 4-1.

 

Turning to high school baseball, the Carrolton Hawks improved to 21-6 on the season by defeating the CM Eagles 5-2.

 

The Edwardsville tigers defeated Jerseyville 3-1.

 

Alton moved to 2 games over .500 but it took 8 innings for the Redbirds to triumph over McCleur North.

 

And the Piasa Birds of Southwestern crushed Brussels 11-1.

The SIUE Softball cougars season ended with a thud Friday. In the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament, the Cougars suffered their second loss of the tournament falling to Eastern Illinois University 8-0. After the game, SIUE first baseman Zoe Shafer was named to the all-tournament team.

 

The SIUE Baseball squad also took on Eastern Illinois University, but this was game one of three game regular season series at Coaches Stadium in Charleston. The Cougars gave up five runs in the fifth and fell to the Panthers 6-2.

 

In MLB action Friday, the Cubs and White Sox hooked up at Wrigley. The Cubs stomped on the Sox Friday, taking the game 11-2.

 

The Cardinals turned on the offense spigot full blast on Friday, and they went on to defeat the San Diego Padres 9 to 5.   The Cardinals and Padres continue with their series through Sunday.
